"When is it Classy to be Naked?"

When I was looking through my houses magazines I noticed a lot of magazines like Maxim, FHM, ESPN, GQ, and Total Film Guide. I noticed that out of these six magazines 4 had pictures of women with barely any clothes on. After looking through most of the magazines I realized that many of the women in these magazines were very proud of being portrayed in these magazines as sexual beings. Is this something that has strengthen women's cause? Because I have heard that magazines like Playboy are classy ways of getting nude in print. I do not see how this is true though, is there really a way a woman can show herself naked in a way that does not turn her in to a sexual object instead of a person? I have been wondering this for a while because I see this as just as objectifying as women that you see in peoples cell phones or email or anywhere... is the only difference the brand that comes with Playboy makes it socially acceptable to be in naked in this magazine?

  1. I think you make a valid point and pose good questions. Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is these magagines are a good way for girls to "get their foot in the door". By posing for these magazines, these girls either think they are or they are getting their start in the industry. Now, is it right? Most would say no but its just the way it works. For a woman to be successful in "the industry" she usually (but not always) has to be willing to objectify herself; because everyone else will. Think about it this way; do we (as a culture) go and see movies on a regular basis with unattractive actors and actresses? By buying these magazines and going to see these movies, we are supporting the way the industry works, we are supporting the objectivity of women.

  2. I believe that choosing to pose naked is the choice of the person doing it, but having a title of a playmate, or a maxim girl doesn't make it any less objectifying. If women want to stop being seen as sex objects they need to take the first step and stop being so willing to be sexualized. I don't think that being in playboy makes it in better. Magazine like Maxim and Playboy are there to objectify women, not to try to empower them. Even though there are some magazine for women that objectify men, they usually show less skin and most women do not look at these. Men however look at magazine like playboy a lot and this magazine is only for a man. In order to stop this stereotype that women are the sexual ones and men can only benefit from it; women need to stand up and stop being okay with being just a sex object. I understand that even know this would be my ideal, that it won't actually happen, but it is okay to dream of a world where women have equality and are not seen as someone just to look at.
